118 Martyrs of Vietnam

According to the history of Vietnamese Catholic Church, it is estimated that hundreds of thousands of people were Christian confessors to their faith [1]. Of the 118 martyrs, 117 Blesseds were canonized by Pope John Paul II on 19/6/1988 and Andrew of Phú Yên, beatified on 5/3/2000 [2].

  19. Blessed Andrew of Phú Yên, born in the province of Phú Yên in 1625, baptized at the age of 15, at the same time with his widowed mother and siblings by Father Đắc Lộ (Alexandre de Rhodes). He was martyred on July 26, 1644 and was beatified on 05/03/2000 by Pope John Paul II.

117 Venerables were honored by the Roman Catholic Church as the Blessed through four stages:

  • May 27, 1900 (Pope Leo XIII): 64 Blesseds
  • May 20, 1906 (Pope Pius X): 8 Blesseds
  • May 02, 1909 (Pope Pius X): 20 Blesseds
  • April 28, 1951 (Pope Pius XII): 25 Blesseds
  • June 19, 1988 Pope John Paul II officially canonized 117 Blesseds.

By nationality, 117 Martyrs of Việt Nam are grouped as follows:

  • 11 Spanish: 06 Bishops and 05 Dominican priests,
  • 10 Frenchmen: 02 Bishops and 08 priests of The Society of Foreign Missions of Paris (MEP),
  • 96 Vietnameses: 37 priests, 14 catechists, 01 seminarian and 44 laymen, including a female saint: Agnes Lê Thị Thành.

According to Vietnamese history, they have sacrificed their lives for the Evangelization during the time of the kings as follows:

02 Blesseds, Lord Trịnh Sâm (1767-1782),
02 Blesseds, King Cảnh Thịnh (1782-1802),
58 Blesseds, King Minh Mạng (1820-1841),

50 Blesseds, King Tự Đức (1847-1883).

In the 18th and 19th century, there were approximately from 130 to 300 thousand Catholics died for their Christian belief. Only for five years, from 1857 to 1862, there were about 5,000 Christians were martyred for their faithful confession, including approximately 215 clergymen, religious men and women and about 40,000 worshipers, who were captured and imprisoned or exiled to death.
